Are You going to the Dentist Every Six Months?
Are You going to the Dentist Every Six Months?
The importance of a regular dental exam and teeth cleaning can’t be understated. Smiling is scientifically proven to make you happier and if you aren’t happy and confident with your teeth, you’re probably not smiling. But that’s just an example. If you skip out on dental exams and teeth cleaning, you also miss out on preventing many problems before they start.
Gum disease is the most obvious one. And one of the most deadly. Yeah, not going to the dentist can cause more then tooth problems. Getting a dental exam every six months stops plague build-up. Because as plaque builds up and dies of around the teeth, it eventually hardens, becoming tartar or calculus. Once the tartar builds up around the teeth and the gums, it causes the gums to pull away from the teeth. This allows food to build up and harbor bacteria. As the bacteria enters the bloodstream, dead plaque hardens and calcifies and is then referred to as tartar, or calculus. Once the calculus builds up around the teeth, in between them, and the gums, it causes the gums to pull away from the teeth. When the gums pull away from the teeth, a pocket is created which allows food and debris to accumulate, harboring even more bacteria. This also allows bacteria to enter the bloodstream. That can cause blood clots and lead to heart disease and other illnesses. Studies find people with gum disease are twice as likely to suffer from heart disease.
Going to the dentist doesn’t sound so cosmetic now, does it? But in addition to preventing gum disease, a regular dental check up and teeth cleaning, halts tooth decay and enamel erosion before it starts. And it can also stop any further problems from developing if you haven’t been getting regular check ups.
But just by going you reinforce to yourself how important taking care of your teeth is. Your dentist can advise you on whether you are flossing correctly and the cleaning removes all the buildup from those hard to reach spaces your toothbrush just can’t reach.
And these are just some of the reasons a regular six month check up and cleaning is o important.

Your Oral Health
Your Oral Health
Your oral health and the quality of your smile have a large impact on your well being. A bright, welcoming smile can greatly increase your self-confidence, and make a positive impression on others. The health of your teeth and gums also affects other aspects of your physical health. Researchers continually link good oral health to a lower risk of heart attack, stroke and other life-threatening conditions.
The most important part of maintaining your oral health is conscientious personal oral hygiene and regular maintenance visits with Dr. Yurovsky and her team.
Brushing and Flossing
Brushing and flossing removes food particles and helps prevent the buildup of bacteria on and around your teeth. This bacteria will otherwise accumulate, and harden into a thick plaque, eventually causing tooth decay and bone loss below the gum. Some tips for maintaining your oral health are:
- Brush twice daily with fluoridated toothpaste, ideally after each meal.
- Floss at least once a day.
- Limit snacking in between meals and minimize the amount of processed sugars you consume.

Extractions
Each individual tooth is important to the structure of the jaw and health of the surrounding teeth. For this reason, we will most often attempt to save the natural tooth using procedures such as fillings, inlays and onlays, build-ups and crowns or root canals. However, there are several possible reasons we might recommend extracting a tooth instead of saving it.
When a tooth has been removed, nearby teeth may move and cause problems with chewing or with your jaw joint. To avoid these complications, Dr. Yurovsky may recommend that you replace the extracted tooth with a dental implant.
Dental implants are the most natural replacement for missing teeth because they mimic the natural tooth root as opposed to simply bridging the gap, as is done with Bridges. Because dental implants replace the tooth root, they prevent the neighboring teeth from shifting and interfering with proper jaw function.

However, there are several possible reasons we might recommend extracting a tooth instead of saving it.
- There can be so much decay in the tooth that it can not be restored and may endanger the surrounding teeth and jaw. In this case we will recommend removing the tooth and replacing it with a bridge, dental implant, or removable partial denture.
- A baby tooth can cause problems if it does not fall out as it should. Most often, this is because it was not shaped correctly or it has too long of a root. It will be important to remove the baby tooth to make room for the permanent tooth to emerge.
- Misaligned or impacted teeth (such as the Wisdom Teeth) can cause pain or discomfort and affect the alignment of the rest of the jaw.

Now you can smile more during treatment with clear aligners from Invisalign.
Invisalign is a technology developed by Align. These “braces” consist of a series of clear plastic trays, or aligners, that are specifically designed and fabricated for you. These aligners are clear and removable and adjust your teeth on a stage-by-stage basis, about two weeks per aligner.
Invisalign has many benefits, the greatest being that they are nearly invisible. They are also removable so you can brush, floss, and eat as usual.
The process begins with a consultation here with Dr. Yurovsky. She will evaluate your particular situation to determine if you are a candidate for Invisalign. This treatment is not appropriate for children, but many teens and adults with less severe orthodontic needs can take advantage of this fabulous new technology.
